Speaker: Dr. Jaume Manero, Computer Science Department at the Technical University of Catalonia.
Jaume Manero is a PhD in Artificial Intelligence by the Computer Science Department at the Technical University of Catalonia. His research interest lies in the intersection of deep learning and machine learning and renewable generation and grid stability. He is an adjunct professor at Dalhousie University (Faculty of Computer Science) in Nova Scotia, Canada, where he teaches Machine Learning and Cloud computing courses. He collaborates also with IE University in Madrid, where he teaches Artificial Intelligence courses at Post-graduate level. He researches at the High Performance Artificial Intelligence Group (HPAI) at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, in a strong team of researchers that leveraging the capacity of this large computing resource, try to find some answers, with the application of AI, to problems that impact our society. His interest lies on how the application of Artificial Intelligence can help to make possible and accelerate the decarbonization effort that our countries are immersed, pushing forward this multi-disciplinary effort.
Artificial Intelligence has seen a great evolution over the last few years. The development of novel deep learning techniques in many new complex applications using unstructured and massive amounts of data has opened the door for new and applications and breakthrough transformations in many industries and scientific areas. Renewable generation and its integration into the electricity grids is an area where deep learning applications have great potential. The engineering of the renewable generation engines which generates large amounts of data, together with its intermittency, generates a promising test bed for new and deep learning-based approaches that allow increases of efficiency and reliability of renewable generation. Marine renewable approaches integrate the intermittency of the natural phenomena (wind, tides, waves) with engineered devices that generate large amounts of structured and unstructured data, in a rough environment that has its own limitations and challenges. In this conference we will discuss several promising research areas in marine generation where the application of deep learning is a use case under development either in the Academic research or in real-life application of the industry.
